Complications–1938 Rio Grande Compact

The article “Compact Complications: Water Wars between Texas and New Mexico Are Nothing New–But the Times Are Changing” by Laura Paukus addresses drought, depleted groundwater levels and burgeoning populations affecting the already inter-state allocation of water from the Rio Grande, not to mention the compact treaty with Mexico. Under the 1938 Rio Grande Compact, New Mexico, Texas and Colorado share upper Rio Grande River waters. Texas is suing New Mexico and Colorado for alleged violations of the Rio Grande Compact by repeatedly “intercepting” water intended for use in Texas.

The article and more information on the lawsuit can be found on the UNM School of Law, Utton Transboundary Resources Center website (scroll to the bottom of the homepage).
